Chad Scott has been on Neal Brown’s staff for six years, including the past two as the offensive coordinator. His responsibility is the running backs, a position he has coached for all six years, has enjoyed continued success as he is done an outstanding job developing the players under his tutelage. In 2024, WVU is No. 7 in Power 4 for rushing offense and is the only FBS team to have three different players to rush for at least 620 yards. The Mountaineers have rushed for at least 140 yards in 24 out of the last 26 games, dating back to 2022. West Virginia finished with 2,976 rushing yards in 2023, ranking No. 1 among Power 5 schools, while quarterback Garrett Greene tied for No. 1 nationally in quarterback rushing touchdowns. WVU was the only school in FBS to have three different players rush for over 750 yards. Also, in Big 12 games, WVU was the only school to finish with more than 2,000 rushing yards. Tight end Kole Taylor became the first Mountaineer tight end since 1991 to lead the team in receptions, racking up 444 yards on 35 catches and four touchdowns. Chad Scott is a skilled recruiter who does an outstanding job of developing the players to make an immediate impact on the field. This showed last year when freshman running back Jahiem White led the Big 12 and set a school record, averaging 7.7 yards per carry. The Athletic and On3’s Freshman All-America Team member had the most rushing yards by a freshman running back and broke WVU’s freshman single-season record. Junior running back CJ Donaldson Jr. is in his third year with the program and has scored a rushing touchdown in 20 of his 29 career games, totaling 26 touchdowns. Since 2019, WVU’s rushing yards having progressed each year starting at 879 yards to finishing with 2,976 in 2023. The team has averaged 154.9 rush yards per game since 2019 when WVU averaged 73.3 yards per game. In Scott’s previous two years working with running back Leddie Brown, he rushed for 1,010 yards and nine touchdowns, earning All-Big 12 Conference First Team and 1,065 yards the next year to go over 1,000 yards for the second straight season, and he finished with a team-high 14 offensive touchdowns.
