Why should this nominee be considered for the Broyles Award?
Since joining the Wake Forest staff prior to the 2014 season, Cohen has made an impact on the Demon Deacon front four. Each season since he has arrived on campus at least one defensive lineman has earned All-ACC honors.
Coach's Past Performance
Cohen has also proven to put plenty of talent in the NFL, producing at least one pro player at four different stops including Wake Forest. A 2017 graduate, Duke Ejifor posted 17 sacks over his final two seasons on campus and went on to be drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round.Carlos “Boogie” Bashham Jr. enjoyed a breakout campaign off the edge in 2019. He was the ACC leader with 18.0 tackles for loss while tying for 14th nationally with 11.0 sacks.In previous stops, Cohen has also spent time teaching the linebacker position. While at Rutgers, he helped tutor one of the most accomplished players in Scarlet Knights’ history in Kasheem Green. The 2012 Big East Defensive Player of the Year racked up 136 tackles, six sacks, six forced fumbles, two interceptions and two defensive touchdowns en route to being named a first team All-American honoree.
Team Record and Standings
Wake Forest is currently 4-3 overall and has a record of 3-3 in ACC play. This would mark a program record fifth consecutive season the Demon Deacons are bowl eligible.
Team/Unit Stats
Over the last four seasons, the Deacons have racked up 125 sacks, the most sacks of any four-year period in school history. This season, Wake Forest has 15 sacks coming from nine different players. The Deacs defense has also forced eight fumbles and has 12 intercpetions. Additionally, the Demon Deacons have intercpeted 12 passes this season, returning three for touchdowns. Wake Forest’s +15 turnover margin ranks first in the country and only one other program has a positive double-digit turnover margin.
Individual Player Stats
Carlos “Boogie” Basham Jr. hadthe longest active streak in the country of23consecutive games with a tackle for loss end against Syracuse (10/31). He wasthe only player in the country to have a streak in double digits when the streak ended. Basham heads into the eighthgameof the season ranked 10thin the nationwith 39sack yards on his 5.0 sacks on the season. He posted a career-high tying nine tackles against No. 19 Virginia Tech to go along with a sack, tackle for loss and forced fumble. Basham recorded a sack against Trevor Lawrence of Clemson on the opening drive of the season for 16 yards. He has at least one sack in 13of his last 16games played including one in the first fivegames in 2020.
