2024 Nominee

Matt Lubick

Mountain West

Nevada

Offensive Coordinator

Why should this nominee be considered for the Broyles Award?
-First season on Nevada staff (offensive coordinator) in 2024. -Heading into Week 12 (Nov. 23), Nevada ranks in the national Top 20 in both red-zone offense (91.2 percent success rate) and third-down conversion rate (47.6). A season after scoring on just 80 percent of its 35 overall red-zone trips with just 16 touchdowns, Nevada in 2024 ranks 20th in the country in red-zone efficiency, converting 31-of-34 trips including 28 touchdowns. -After ranking last in the Mountain West in third-down efficiency in 2023, this season under Lubick the Wolf Pack now ranks 14th in the country with a 47.6 conversion rate, a figure leading directly to its 31:29 time of possession. That TOP figure also ranks 31st in the country. -After also ranking last in the Mountain West in scoring and total offense in 2023, Lubick has the Wolf Pack offense improved to seventh and sixth in the conference, respectively, in 2024. -On the ground, the Wolf Pack has already surpassed its 2023 rushing total. Through 11 games, Nevada has rushed for 1,964 yards at a clip of 4.8 per carry, a drastic difference from the 2023 numbers of 1,498 yards on 3.4 per attempt over 12 contests. -The significant improvement on offense has already led the Wolf Pack to three wins, surpassing the team’s win total (two) in each of the past two seasons. -Quarterback Brendon Lewis is in the midst of a career season. On the year, Lewis has had a hand in 20 touchdowns (12 passing, eight rushing), just over half of the Wolf Pack’s 37 scores, while completing 67.5 percent of his passes for 1,730 yards with 692 rushing yards. Among Mountain West quarterbacks, Lewis leads in rushing yards, is second in completion percentage, ranks third in overall total offense (2,422 yards) and fourth in total offense per game (242.2 ypg). This is following a 2023 season in which Lewis completed just 55.5 percent of his passes and threw just two touchdowns. Through eight games in 2024, Lewis has 1,290 passing yards, nearly surpassing his 2023 total (1,313). -In the run game, three Wolf Pack players have rushed for at least 200 yards, with Savion Red (676, eight touchdowns) and Lewis (692 yards, eight touchdowns) ranking among the Mountain West top nine. Patrick Garwo III, an All-ACC running back at Boston College in 2021 before injuries limited him in 2022 and 2023, has returned to form, scoring five times on the ground with 246 rushing yards. -Coach Lubick has selflessly shared the testimony of his battle with leukemia and his remission and recovery progress with the team, media, and community this season. In media interviews, Lewis and the Nevada quarterbacks have spoken of his inspiration and strength and its positive impact on them individually as well as the team.
