Why should this nominee be considered for the Broyles Award?

Phil Parker is in his 24th season on the Iowa coaching staff. He is in his 11th season as defensive coordinator. During that time Iowa’s defense has annually ranked among the national leaders. In 2022, Iowa defense ranks first in the nation in yards allowed per play (3.85), third in total defense (264.4), fourth in defensive touchdowns (3), fifth in scoring defense (14.3), fifth in team pass efficiency defense (106.14), eighth in rushing defense (92.8) and 10th in passing yards allowed (171.7).

Iowa’s defense has allowed three or fewer points in three games and 13 or less in seven of nine games, holding all nine opponents under their season total offense average and eight of nine under their season scoring average. Five of nine opponents have gained less than 200 yards total offense. Six of nine opponents have rushed for less than 100 yards.

With Phil Parker on staff, Iowa won Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2004 and West Division titles in 2015 and 2021. Since 2017 the Iowa defense leads the nation in interceptions, including a school-record 25 in 2021. With Phil Parker on staff, Iowa has won nine bowl games since 2021, second most in the Big Ten. in 2021, Iowa’s defense ranked in the top 20 nationally in interceptions (first), turnovers gained (third), defensive touchdowns (seventh), turnover margin (11th), pass efficiency defense (sixth), rushing defense (13th), scoring defense (13th) and total defense (20th),

Team Record and Standings
Iowa is 5-4 through nine games, with two losses to top 5 teams in the nation (Michigan, Ohio State), and two losses by three points (Iowa State, Illinois). Iowa has been bowl eligible in 20 of the last 21 seasons, posting a 9-9 bowl record. Iowa won Big Ten West Division titles in 2015 and 2021. Iowa has ranked in the final top 10 of the national polls five times since 2002, second among Big Ten schools during that time to Ohio State. Set school record with 12 wins in 2015. Iowa had 47 wins from 2015-19, the most of any five-year period in school history.

Iowa led the nation in interceptions in 2017 and 2021 and tied for second in 2018. Iowa annually ranks among national leaders in several defensive categories, including yards per play, scoring, rushing, passing and total defense. 
Individual Player Stats
Since 2012, five Iowa defensive backs have been named Defensive Back of the Year in the Big Ten Conference. Iowa  players have won the Lott IMPACT Trophy (Josey Jewell), Jim Thorpe Award (Desmond King), Jack Lambert Award (Jewell), Jack Tatum Award (King and Josh Jackson). His players have won the following Big Ten Awards: Defensive Player of the Year (Jewell and Daviyon Nixon), Defensive Lineman of the Year (Nixon and Mitch King), Linebacker of the Year (Jewell), Defensive Back of the Year (Micah Hyde, King, Jackson, Amani Hooker, Riley Moss)
