Coach Highlights

Though best known as an offensive coordinator, Al Borges’s earlier defensive roots and all-around coaching savvy shaped his sideline contributions at UCLA (1998-2002) and Michigan (2000, 2007-2010). On game days, Borges balanced offensive orchestration with defensive insight-cross-talking with DCs on blitz timing and shifts in response to opponent tendencies. His sideline impact was felt most in his ability to adjust tempo and play-selection based on defensive performance; he’d quick-strike when his defense forced a three-and-out or call clock-burners when field position favored a stout front. Borges used headset channels to coordinate multi-phased screen defenses when his own offense faltered, underscoring his holistic view of the game. Known for his encyclopedic football mind, he kept a laminated sheet of opponent formations clipped to his belt, flipping to the right section at crucial junctures. Though his head-coaching tenure was brief, Borges’s sideline demeanor-part strategist, part mentor-left lasting impressions on both sides of the ball, cementing his reputation as one of college football’s most cerebral coaches.
